In the coming winter, from 23 February to 2 March, 2024, Otepää will host the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships. The International Biathlon Union (IBU) carried out an inspection at Tehvandi Sports Center to assess their readiness to host the championships.
This is the second time that the biathlon youth and junior world champions are crowned in Otepää. The Tehvandi Sports Center hosted the IBU World Youth and Junior Championships for the first time in 2018. The Otepää Organizing Committee previously organized the European Championships in biathlon in 2010 and 2015 and the BMW IBU World Cup in 2022.
Arne Eidam, IBU Junior Cup Race Director, inspected the Otepää competition centre on behalf of the International Biathlon Union (IBU). "All parties are very well prepared for the title competitions to be carried out in winter. Managing the competitions for young athletes goes very smoothly when you do it with the organizers who have great passion and experience," Eidam said.
During the inspection, the shooting range, stadium and tracks of Tehvandi Sports Centre were inspected. Telecasting issues were also discussed. "On behalf of the IBU, I can confirm that in cooperation with the Otepää Organizing Committee, the Estonian Biathlon Federation and the broadcaster Estonian Public Broadcasting, we are ready to move on to the last preparations," Eidam said. He added that he is very much looking forward to the Otepää World Youth and Junior Championships.
The organizers of the event find the advice from the International Biathlon Union (IBU) a great help. "We will continue to work to ensure that the competitions are conducted at a high international level and that athletes, teams, partners and spectators get the best biathlon experience," said Aivar Nigol, Chairman of the Otepää Organizing Committee.
The IBU World Youth and Junior Championships will be held in Otepää from 23 February to 2 March, 2024. The eight days of competition will see mixed relay, individual distance, sprint, mass start and relay for both the youth and junior age groups. "You should buy your ticket to the shooting range grandstand in good time, as the number of places is limited. You can enjoy the competition standing by the track free of charge," Nigol added.
Competition Passes and Weekend Passes are on sale at Piletilevi. Day Passes will go on sale in autumn 2023.
